Sally Mapp and Bone-setting
For years before D.D. Palmer established his school of chiropractics in 1897, people used earlier practices to treat spinal ailments. One of the individuals involved in bone-setting was a colorful character named Sally Mapp.
Both eccentric and talented, Sally Mapp learned bone-setting from her father, John Wallin (Wallen or Wallis). Bone-setting involved joint manipulation, realigning joint dislocations, as well as the general practice of setting broken bones.
